According to the available documents, a member of the staff of United States Senator Rand Paul was attacked on Saturday after leaving a restaurant in Washington by a guy who had just been released from a federal prison the previous day.
The defendant, identified as Glynn Neal, 42, of Southeast District of Columbia, was taken into custody and charged with the felony offence of assault with the intent to murder. According to the documents filed with the court, he is being detained without bail. In 2011, Mr. Neal was found guilty of pandering and making threats to kidnap, among other crimes; he was freed from federal prison on Friday after having served his time for those offences.
It was not possible to get in touch with Mr. Neal’s solicitor almost away, according to the court documents. Officers were informed by the staff member, a guy who was not named in the criminal paperwork or by Mr. Paul’s office, that he did not know the individual who attacked him.
Mr. Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, issued a statement in which he stated, This past weekend in broad daylight in Washington, D.C., a member of my staff was violently assaulted. At this time, we would ask that you respect our need for privacy so that everyone may concentrate on getting well.
According to the criminal papers, the victim and a friend were strolling in the 1300 block of H Street NE after leaving a Mexican restaurant when Mr. Neal stepped out from behind a wall and began stabbing a member of the staff. The companion was with the victim throughout the attack.
According to the investigators, Mr. Neal did not communicate with or make any demands on the victim.
Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department located a knife one block away from the scene of the assault, close to bloody clothing and drops of blood on the ground. They said that the victim suffered serious injuries that required surgery, including a laceration to the left ear, a puncture wound to the skull that was likely to have caused a brain bleed, a wound to the torso, as well as a punctured lung. The investigators said that the stabbing was captured on camera and that Mr. Neal left behind a mobile that assisted in identifying him as the culprit in the case.
