At least 25 people were slain by militants belonging to the Islamic State group at a school in western Uganda. The institution was targeted by the terrorists.
Following the assault on the Lhubiriha secondary school in Mpondwe, eight more students and staff members are now in serious condition.
According to the police, the assault that took place on Friday was carried out by a group from Uganda called the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to the police, soldiers are now chasing the gang that ran into Virunga National park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the national police spokesman Fred Enaga stated that so far 25 corpses have been retrieved from the school and taken to Bwera Hospital. He this announce a statement.
During the incident that took place on Friday night, he claimed, a dormitory at the school was set on fire, and a grocery store was ransacked.
According to reports from the AFP news agency, there were a few pupils who could not be located.
It has been many years since a similar assault on a Ugandan school has occurred prior to this one, which took place less than two kilometres (1.25 miles) from Uganda’s border the Republic of the Congo (DRC).
In June of 1998, an assault by the ADF on Kichwamba Technical Institute near the border of the DRC resulted in the deaths of eighty students who were burned to death in their dorms. More than a hundred kids were taken hostage.
In the 1990s, the eastern region of Uganda saw the formation of the ADF, which later took up weapons against the long-serving President Yoweri Museveni. The ADF claimed that Muslims were being persecuted by the government.
Following its humiliating defeat at the hands of the Ugandan army in 2001, it migrated to the North Kivu area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Since the early 1990s, insurgents affiliated with the ADF have maintained bases of operations within the DRC.
