During Wednesday’s session of parliament, Sri Lanka’s new President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout package would resume in August. This announcement comes as the island nation grapples with the worst economic crisis it has faced in decades.
Wickremesinghe said in a speech that he also called on parliamentarians to join together to establish an all-party government, “We are confident of successfully finishing negotiations,” he added.
Wickremesinghe was sworn into office one month ago after his predecessor, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, resigned and subsequently left the country in response to widespread unrest over his mismanagement of the economy.
