Liz Cheney has been made to pay the price for her steadfast resistance to Donald Trump’s attack on American democracy by having her congressional seat taken away by a candidate who was supported by the previous president.
In the Republican primary election to choose Wyoming’s lone representative in the House of Representatives, the vice-chair of the January 6 committee lost to a conservative lawyer named Harriet Hageman. This election was held to decide who will represent Wyoming in Washington.
She gave a speech in Jackson in which she admitted loss and stated the following: “Two years ago, I won this primary with 73% of the vote.” It would not have been difficult for me to repeat the action. The way forward seemed clear, but in order to take it, I would have had to agree with Vice President Trump’s fabrication about the election in 2020.
Cheney proceeded by saying, “No seat in the House, no position in this nation is more important than the ideas that we have all taken an oath to uphold.” In addition, I was well aware of the possible political repercussions that may result from carrying out my role.
“The integrity of our republic depends on the willingness of all candidates for office to accept the results of elections in a dignified manner. Tonight, the primary election has been won by Harriet Hageman, who has gotten the most votes. She triumphed. I phoned her to tell her that I was giving up the race. The voting for this primary election has ended. But now comes the time when the actual job starts.”
The victory, which was widely expected by opinion surveys, continues a winning trend for candidates backed by Trump and sends a blow to what is left of the establishment inside the Republican party.
In Wyoming, a very conservative state in which the Cheney family has always been regarded as political royalty, the idea would have been unfathomable only a few short years ago.

However, prominent Republicans around the country were excited to celebrate the loss of Cheney.
Cheney was hailed as the “moral victor” by many who disagreed with the former president.
