A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeast Turkey and northern Syria in the early morning of February 6, 2023.
The quake caused hundreds of buildings to collapse, killing over 1,300 people, with hundreds still believed to be trapped in the rubble.
The quake was felt as far away as Cairo, and the area affected by the quake has been shaped by the ongoing civil war in Syria for over a decade.
The quake resulted in widespread destruction and hundreds of families were trapped in rubble, according to the Syrian opposition emergency organization, the White Helmets.
Health facilities and hospitals were strained, quickly filling with wounded. Nearly 2,800 search and rescue teams have been deployed to the affected areas, and many countries, including Russia, Germany, and Taiwan, have offered to send help.
