According to law enforcement sources, on Thursday, the lead singer of the indie rock band Cage the Elephant, Matt Shultz, was taken into custody at a hotel in Manhattan on allegations related to firearms.
According to the criminal complaint, Mr. Shultz, who is 39 years old, was placed under arrest on Thursday morning when an employee of the Bowery Hotel saw him taking a revolver out of his jeans pocket while he was using one of the public facilities at the hotel.
According to the office of the Manhattan district attorney, Mr. Shultz, who is from Nashville, looked to be under the influence of alcohol.
According to court records and the office of the prosecutor, law enforcement officers responded to a 911 call, obtained a search warrant, and discovered two loaded firearms in a bag in Mr. Shultz’s hotel room after conducting a search. The firearms were a.45-caliber Sig Sauer pistol and a Smith & Wesson pistol of the same calibre.
The prosecutor’s office said that the officers also discovered 11 Polaroid photographs of the handguns, some of which showed a hand pointing to the weaponry, as well as six handwritten notes. According to the office of the prosecutor, one of the letters had a statement that said, “I will defend myself if I am assaulted.”
According to the documents filed in court, Mr. Shultz is being charged with numerous counts of possessing guns. Wednesday is the day when he is supposed to show up in court. On Sunday, his attorney, Sanford Talkin, chose not to comment on the matter. It was unclear right away whether or whether Mr. Shultz had been freed on bond, which had been set at $30,000.
Cage the Elephant is well renowned for its psychedelic sound, unique echoes of earlier rock periods, and Mr. Shultz’s warbling, occasionally aggressive voice. The band was established in 2006 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The band published their first studio album in 2008, and they have since gone on to win the Grammy Award for best rock album twice, most recently in 2020 for their album titled “Social Cues.” 2015 was the year that the band took home their first Grammy for the album “Tell Me I’m Pretty.”
According to the results of the Grammy Awards, the band’s album “Thank You Happy Birthday,” which was released in 2011, debuted at position No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, and the lead single from the album, “Shake Me Down,” reached position No. 1 on Billboard’s Rock Songs and Alternative Songs charts.
According to the Grammy Awards, Mr. Shultz had previously held positions as a plumber and at a sandwich shop prior to the formation of the band.
