Trump Labels Harris as ‘Radical’ in First Rally Following Her Nomination

Former President Donald J. Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris as radically liberal during a rally in Charlotte, N.C., repurposing attacks previously aimed at President Biden. As Harris emerges as his opponent in the upcoming election, Trump targeted her record as a prosecutor and her stance on abortion, attempting to undermine her strengths with voters.

Trump accused Harris of supporting extreme abortion policies, falsely claiming she supported “execution of a baby” after birth. This stance aligns with his efforts to galvanize conservative voters, despite his previous lukewarm engagement with the abortion issue. Trump’s rhetoric at the rally also included criticism of Harris’s record on crime and criminal justice reform, portraying her as lenient and supportive of policies like ending cash bail. He sought to contrast this with his endorsement by the National Association of Police Organizations, framing himself as the candidate for law-abiding citizens.

These attacks, however, carry political risks for Trump. By emphasizing Harris’s stance on abortion, he risks drawing attention to his role in overturning Roe v. Wade, a decision that has energized Democratic voters. Furthermore, Trump’s attempt to label Harris as a “radical-left lunatic” more liberal than Biden aims to sway moderate and independent voters, crucial demographics that contributed to Biden’s 2020 victory.

Trump’s remarks come in the wake of President Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race, which led to Harris becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee. The former president’s campaign has been quick to adjust its strategy, focusing much of its criticism on Harris. Trump tied her closely to Biden’s policies, particularly on immigration, a key issue for his campaign. He repeatedly referred to her as the “border czar,” a role she never formally held but was tasked with addressing root causes of migration from Central America. Trump criticized her handling of this responsibility, despite a decrease in border crossings since the early surge during Biden’s presidency.

In addition to these attacks, Trump continued his usual rally rhetoric, denouncing Biden’s climate change efforts, making inflammatory comparisons about migrants, and reiterating his baseless claims about the 2020 election being rigged. He also accused Harris of failing to deter Russia from invading Ukraine, attempting to position her as weak on foreign policy.

Harris’s campaign, represented by spokesman Ammar Moussa, countered Trump’s narrative, framing the upcoming election as a choice between Trump’s extreme agenda and Harris’s commitment to protecting freedom and fairness for all Americans. Moussa accused Trump of using divisive rhetoric to distract from substantive issues.

Trump also criticized Harris for not attending a Congressional address by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, insinuating that she was “against the Jewish people,” despite her strong personal connections to the Jewish community, including her Jewish husband. This attack follows Trump’s attempts to align himself with pro-Israel positions and criticize Democratic approaches to the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Trump’s rally in Charlotte marks a shift in his campaign’s focus as they adapt to Harris’s emergence as the Democratic frontrunner. Despite the usual mix of incendiary comments and policy criticisms, Trump’s strategy indicates a broader effort to reframe his attacks and appeal to a conservative base, while attempting to undermine Harris’s appeal to key voter demographics.
