UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has fired the chairman of the Conservative Party, Nadhim Zahawi, due to a “serious breach” of the ministerial code over failure to promptly disclose an inquiry into his taxes resulting in a penalty and settlement with the UK tax authority estimated at £5m.
This is the second time a minister has been fired for accusations of wrongdoing in three months. The deputy Prime Minister, Dominic Raab, is under investigation for bullying civil servants.
The Prime Minister has also faced criticism for recent ethical issues including not wearing a seatbelt in the back of his official car and violating pandemic lockdown restrictions. Despite the firing of Zahawi, accusations of “Tory sleaze” persist, leading to declining support for the Conservative Party in polls.
