According to documents filed in a Los Angeles court on Wednesday, Britney Spears‘ husband of 14 months, Sam Asghari, has filed for divorce. As Ms. Spears worked to end a conservatorship that had curtailed her personal and professional freedom, the pair started dating in 2016. Seven months after a California judge’s order dissolved the conservatorship, she married Mr. Asghari, an actor and personal trainer who shot to fame thanks to his association with Ms. Spears.
Below, you’ll see a timeline of the relationship’s major events, from court appearances to Instagram postings.
In interviews, both Britney Spears and Sam Asghari have said that they first met while filming the music video for her song “Slumber Party.” Mr. Asghari said to Men’s Health that he and the actor had shared contact information during the filming. He gushed about finally getting the chance “to meet one of the biggest artists of all time,” adding, “I had butterflies.”
On New Year’s Day, Ms. Spears posted an Instagram photo of the pair enjoying dinner together, which was the first clue to their connection. In November 2017, they attended a Los Angeles Lakers game together, and in April 2018 they attended the GLAAD Media Awards, where Ms. Spears was a recipient.
Ms. Spears cancelled a Las Vegas residency for early 2019 and declared a “indefinite work hiatus.” Concerns over her health quickly spread online. There was a status hearing for the conservatorship in May, and supporters representing the #FreeBritney movement held a rally outside the Los Angeles courtroom.
Ms. Spears demanded the termination of the conservatorship in a 23-minute hearing before a Los Angeles court. She complained that the arrangement made it difficult for her to make decisions about her own body, such as whether or not to use a contraceptive. The conservatorship prevents me from getting married or having children at this time.
The conservatorship that had granted Ms. Spears’ father, James P. Spears, control over his daughter’s life and money was terminated by a judgement from Judge Brenda Penny of Los Angeles Superior Court. More than 13 years had passed under the conservatorship. Mr. Asghari uploaded a video of the pair dancing to one of Ms. Spears’ songs before the hearing, with both of them wearing T-shirts that read “#FreeBritney.”
Ms. Spears confirmed through Instagram post that she had miscarried little over a month after announcing her pregnancy. “We have lost our miracle baby,” the parents lamented.
According to their marriage licence, the happy couple tied the knot on June 11. Vogue reports that on June 9 the pair wed in their house in Thousand Oaks, California, and that Madonna, Selena Gomez, Paris Hilton, and Drew Barrymore were among the guests. Ms. Spears changed into numerous different outfits, and her song “Toxic” was played on repeat throughout the reception.
On Wednesday, Mr. Asghari filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court, claiming irreconcilable differences as the reason. Ms. Spears said on Instagram the same day that she would be “buying a horse soon.”
